Factory Elementary School is a 59,000 SF facility in Harford
County. The school was designed as a series of
pods to reduce the large scale of the facility so that its scale
would relate better to the surrounding residential neighborhood.
The site is graded and landscaped with the building elevation
set substantially below the site entrance of Route 24, to
further reduce the impact of its mass. The school has a total of
24 classrooms grouped in three pods of eight classrooms each.
The pods are connected to a common node around which are grouped
the media center, art room, computer lab, and special classroom.
A corridor extends from the node to the lobby and is flanked by
the administrative offices and rooms for specialists. The
cafeteria and gymnasium are located off the lobby and are
designed to be easily closed off from the rest of the school for
after school functions. The school design was selected by the
American Association of School Administrators for an exhibition of recent school design and has received
several craftsmanship awards for the exterior and interior
brickwork. |
